This blog is going to be used as an online journal to show my progress and development into our project 'The Cut'. Our task is to create a short fashion film of 1-2 minutes & I am working with Hayley Buckle. Our film has to be inspired by a young and upcoming designer, a mood and a camera effect. Ours are;
Designer: Avsh Alom Gur
Mood: Expressive
Camera Effect: Darkness
Neither myself or Hayley were aware of our designer or his collections but were pleased with both our mood and camera effect. I think both allow myself and Hayley to be broad with our concept ideas.
I find the prospect of The Cut exciting. We have both previously studied Media & Film and so I feel confident going into this project. I have a BTECH and A Level in Media and have always enjoyed watching and analysing film.
In the afternoon, we had a lecture with James in which he showed us some short films and taught us about semiotic codes. We watched a short film called 'The Passing' by Bill Viola. This was a grainy black and white film and had dark lighting, almost appearing as infra-red in some shots. I interpreted 'The Passing' as a reflection of life & death as it flash-backed to pass memories and I found the background noise of heavy breathing quite chilling and eerie. I thought that this film was wierd but it had interesting connotations & the camera angles like the extreme close ups created a mysterious edge.
We then watched several music videos by Anton Corbijn including Nirvanas 'Heart Shaped Box' and Depeche Modes 'Enjoy the Silence'. 'Enjoy The Silence' showed a modern but medieval king walking across a landscape. I learnt that landscape shots create distance. I liked the saturated colours that were used and how surreal the concept was. In the video for 'Heart Shaped Box' I liked the way in which a variety of shots were used particularly the head shots of Kurt Cobain & thought they were very effective.
